Introducing the Crystal Mascot

Hi Paulo,

Thanks for reaching out. We will be adding the mascot files to the official page shortly.

If the license is permissive, the community will create a variety of images of Crys in the years to come…

I know I’m not alone in saying that I love the drawings @Capital-EX produced (12 hearts here). @mekhla18 would you please consider having a community vote /submission on official art guidelines / style before sending them out / making mugs :)

For me the current image is about a 2/10 and the ones from @Capital-EX are about an 11/10. If a lot of people feel the same way it’d be nice to know and act on it!

And thanks for organizing this. This side of the language is fun and I’m glad you’re doing it!

In the current logo the bird looks blind, which doesn’t sound very good…

Me too!

To clarify, there’s nothing wrong with blindness, but for a language it makes me think there’s a lack of direction.

On another subject, Go’s gopher is very cute! It looks friendly. I want to use a friendly language (or a language that at least has a friendly logo). Some user contributed logos on this thread look friendlier.

The faceted design is cool, but I agree that a more friendly look would be nice. Eyes help a lot there.

Thanks for all the awesome comments over the Mascot design and the names, its super amazing to see the interest within the community to have a cool and best version mascot for the language. We’re following the community discussions and working on all possible measures to make available the appropriate design guidelines and usage for the mascot. Please stay tuned for more news on this.

Happy Crystalising :sunglasses:!

Late to the reply here, but I wanted to say feel free to borrow / take / re-work from my design! I drew it as a bit of fun and I’m glad so many have liked it.

I want to say, your’s design is far better than the official version.

official mascot feels no soul, even a little scary.

only my personal opinion.

Also agree @capital-ex’s drawings are great, I much prefer over the official mascot, and it seems almost everyone feels the same. Thanks to @mekhla18 for promoting involvement and community and idea to create a mascot, but could we have community vote on mascot design?

I believe that licenses are equally as important as the mascot’s design. Perhaps we will use illustrations created by volunteers that are inspired by the official mascot design, rather than the official character design itself. (Otherwise, we cannot say the mascot has been successful.) When characters are used within a community, it often leads to playful or excessive behavior. But in programming groups like Crystal, those worries are not very big. If someone doesn’t like a design without eyes, they can easily make and use a drawing with eyes without worrying about licenses. I see this as the most important part.

Hello members,

Its overwhelming to see all the responses from the community about the mascot design. The design for the mascot was largely inspired by earlier community conversations. We wanted to be consistent with the design so we used what we already had instead of adding new graphic resources just for the mascot. WIth the help of design team’s amazing ideology and efforts, the polyhedron look was established for the Crystal mascot.

We respect the community’s thoughts and ideas wrt having a vote for the mascot design. I would like to keep you appraised that the guidelines for creating iterations to the mascot and its usage will soon be available on the website. This will give you the freedom to create iterations to the original design for the mascot while staying around the appropriate boundaries. Watch out for the details!

Hope we will get to see some amazing and cool versions of the mascot soon :sunglasses:

To me the mascot looks like a pirate crow from Minecraft with both of its legs amputated and being replaced by a wooden ones, all while telling you to GTFO. Yarrr!

There’s nothing cute or appealing about it, the best I could say it’s just weird, and not in a good way. Being blind obviously doesn’t help xD

Ones presented below are IMO way more likeable:

btw, the bird drawing in many renditions reminds a twitter logo, which might or might not be desirable.

Twitter is rebranding as X so I suppose the bird logo is up for grabs

Is there any update on this mascot?
Especially about the licensing.

That looks awesome <3

We got stuck because of different reasons, but the general idea is to be lax on its usage. So don’t worry about it now and use it. And in doubt, simply ask.
