Kind of surprised there is a mascot. Aside from some forum posts and the media area on the site, looks like adoption isn’t there. Thinking it might be nice to see if the community could come up with some ideas to help improve awareness of the language and/or mascot. I always think of the gopher when I think of Go, might be interesting to get ideas together for making Crys known more.
I’ll start:
- Incorporating the mascot on official site like on 404 pages (could reference something like lost shard, lost flight, etc)
- During different seasons have the raven have something like a Christmas hat.
- A “powered by” snippet that apps or websites can use (though just Crystal logo could be good too). Could also use words like “built with” or “sharded with.”
- Useful hints/tips in documentation have Crys and it could be like he is saying something (like a better Clippy, lol).
- Have variants of Crys for areas of focus like devops (hard hat), data science (magnifying glass/monocle), security (trench coat and sunglasses),
- ASCII Crys used in compiler or documentation in random places
- Utilize Crys as a narrator to a beginner guide for those new to the language in different tutorials on making different small projects.
- Use the mascot to highlight best practices, gotchas, performance tips, etc in documentation.
- Have cute Crys gifs and sticker ready images that could be used in posts or social media.
Thoughts?
